SL : I am a French Orthopaedic surgeon. I have completed my orthopaedic training in Lyon, France and after completion of this training I spent one year of fellowship in Sydney, Australia. EHS: Professor Sebastien Lustig, who are you, and how can you introduce yourself as an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

SL : I am a French Orthopaedic surgeon. I have completed my orthopaedic training in Lyon, France and after completion of this training I spent one year of fellowship in Sydney, Australia. I also spent several months visiting other centres of excellence in Arthroplasty surgery in Europe (Rizzoli Institute, Bologna, Italy), Canada (London Ontario) and USA (including Mayo Clinic, RUSH (Chicago), HSS (New-York) …).

I began then my practice in Lyon in 2006 at the Arthritis and Joint Replacement Department with my mentor, professor Philippe Neyret, specializing exclusively in arthritis and joint replacement. Performing over 800 arthroplasties per year, my current practice is focused on hip and knee joint replacement. I have a special interest in rapid recovery, robotic assisted surgery, and revision surgery.

EHS: Do you also get involved in scientific matters and clinical research in Orthopaedics?

SL :  I always had an interest in research and completed my PhD in biomechanics in 2010, thanks to my research on Computer assisted surgery. I have over 200 original research presentations, and over 80 invited presentations at national and international conferences. I have published over 200 studies indexed on Medline and 80 chapters in orthopaedic textbooks. I am involved in four academic degrees in France, one of them being specifically related to bone and joint infection surgery.

I am actively involved in a number of international orthopaedic organizations, including EKS (European Knee Surgery) and EHS (European Hip Society). I am also board member of the French Hip and Knee Society. I am also in the organizing committee of the Lyon Hip Arthroplasty Meeting, an international meeting with around 500 surgeons attending every year. Thanks to these achievements, I was nominated as Full Academic Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Lyon in 2014.

EHS: What about your involvement in the EHS Lille 2020 Congress taking place in Lille, France?

SL : In addition of helping our President Jean Alain Epinette as French host, I will have the pleasure to co-chair with Wim Schreurs the session focusing on New technologies. We’ll talk about additive manufacturing, Robotic assistance, Virtual and Augmented reality and New imaging techniques for preop templating. This should be controversial and we are expecting a lot of discussions around these topics !...
